I teach online but not for a company and therefore don’t have to go mechanically through a coursebook (although I do use a coursebook as the core of what I do). I always begin by asking the student about their day or their week and these conversations at the beginning (and middle and end) of the lesson are a great opportunity for the student to practice their English in talking about a subject that motivates us all: what we’ve been doing and thinking. These are important language-learning moments for both teacher and student. I often – indeed, invariably – pick up from this talk points about structure and vocabulary that allow me to teach something that is individual and very useful to the student. This is something that I feel AI couldn’t replicate with authenticity. In fact, I would probably be marked down by the AI assistant you mention for going “off topic”.
